Bea Buckley Sets Single-Season Program Assists Record
STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Drexel women's lacrosse team fell to Stony Brook, 12-10, in the CAA Championships game on Saturday on Long Island. This is the Seawolves third consecutive conference title. Jenika Cuocco finished with 18 saves, matching a career-high. Bea Buckley and Bridget Finley led the Dragons with five points each.
Jenika Cuocco, Camryn Ryan, and Finley were named to the CAA All-Tournament Team.
Stony Brook got on the board in their second possession of the game. Isabella Caporuscio capitalized on the free position attempt to take the first lead. Casey Colbert followed up exactly one minute later with a score of her own. The Dragons came fighting back, as Buckley dished it behind the net to Bridget Finley, who scored from the left hash to cut the advantage in half. Buckley added another assist, this time finding Kate Marano who came rushing in front of the cage to put it away.
Anna Maria Gragnani gave the Dragons their first lead, scoring just in front of the cage. Stony Brook brought things back even as Charlotte Wilmoth tallied. Casey Colbert patiently waited for the offense to set up, as Wilmouth made a cut down the alley for the goal.
Wilmouth went open the second with her second-straight goal on the women-up just 40 seconds in the quarter. Ellie Wall responded with a score from the eight meters. After the penalty, the sophomore shot bounced off the goalkeeper's goal into the corner of the net. Gragnani followed with pair, with both assists coming from Finley to go back up by one. Stony Brook ended the half with two straight, including another by Wilmouth with one second left on the clock.
Drexel got right back on track to start the second half. Kate Marano scored her 15th goal of the season to tie the game back at 7-7. Bea Buckley dished it to Kate Quinn to retake the lead. With that assist, Buckley punched herself into the Drexel history books, breaking the single-season program record of 41 assists. She finished with five to bring her total to 44 on the year.
Stony Brook finished the quarter of a three goal streak, with Courtney Maclay adding a pair and Caporuscio with another, going up 10-8. Neither team lead by more than two goals the entire way.
Marano and Allison Drake went back-to-back in nearly a two minute span to bring both teams even for the eighth time since the beginning of the game. The Dragons held the Seawolves scoreless for almost seven minutes in the fourth quarter before Kylie Budke put two away two goals in the final 3:27. Drexel could not counter and fell 12-10.
