Dragons Defeat Stony Brook, 49-41, to Begin Drexel's Homecoming Weekend

PHILADELPHIA – Deja Evans came one rebound shy of a double-double after scoring 13 points and grabbing nine rebounds in Drexel's victory against Stony Brook on Friday night at the Daskalakis Athletic Center. Drexel improved to 3-3 in conference play, while Stony Brook fell to 5-2.
BY THE NUMBERS
Evans placed the Dragons in points, finishing with 13 points on six field goals. The junior also added nine rebounds, a block and tied a career-high with five steals. Five rebounds were offensive boards. Evans helped Drexel score 13 2nd chance points.
Amaris Baker scored 12 points and added four rebounds and three assists to the tally.
Laine McGurk also scored 12 points and corralled six boards.
Iriona Gravley made a career-high four blocks on Friday night, topping her previous high of two against Monmouth on February 7, 2025.
The game only saw one team in the lead. Drexel started its 10-0 run 21 seconds into the game. Stony Brook could not tie or take the lead for the rest of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel surged out to a 10-0 lead to begin the game to cause Stony Brook to call its first timeout of the game. The Seawolves dwindled the Dragon lead to four after the visitors finished the quarter outscoring Drexel, 12-4. McGurk finished the quarter with 10 points on 4-for-5 shooting. The junior was 2-for-3 from long range.
The second quarter was a defensive battle. The Seawolves were the first to record a field goal with 6:24 left in the quarter. With four minutes remaining, Drexel launched 9-0 run to take an 11-point lead into the locker room for halftime. Baker led the Dragons with four points. The Drexel defense held Stony Brook to just 1-for-12 shooting in the second frame.
Stony Brook outscored the Dragons by two points in the third frame, 15-13 to pull within nine. The Dragons took seven more shots than the Seawolves and forced Stony Brook to commit nine turnovers. Baker added six points to her stat line to push her to double digits.
Stony Brook was only able to outscore Drexel by one point in the fourth quarter, 12-11. Both team cashed in on four field goals, however it was two Stony Brook threes that set the two teams apart. Evans finished the quarter with five of her 13 points to help Drexel prevail over the Seawolves.

Drexel has less than 24 hours to prepare for its next game. Due to impending weather on Sunday, January 25, the women's basketball game against Towson, originally scheduled for 2 p.m., will now be played on Saturday, January 24 at 6 p.m. as part of a Saturday doubleheader with the men's basketball team, which begins at 2 p.m.
Tickets purchased for the original Sunday date will be honored for Saturday's contest. Additionally, Drexel Athletics is offering fans who purchase tickets to the men's basketball game against Northeastern on Saturday complimentary tickets to the second game of the doubleheader.
