Last-Minute Free Throws Lift Drexel Past Monmouth, 56-53

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – The Drexel women's basketball team made four free throws with less than a minute remaining in regulation to defeat the Monmouth Hawks in West Long Branch, N.J., 56-53. Entering Friday night, Monmouth had one of the CAA's top home records of 8-1. Drexel improved to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
BY THE NUMBERS
Amaris Baker scored a game-high 18 points on 6-for-12 shooting. The graduate student also added three rebounds and two assists to the box score.
Laine McGurk scored 15 points on six field goals and three treys. It is the third time this season that the junior made three three-pointers in a game.
Friday's victory against Monmouth is Drexel's first victory in West Long Branch since 2020, before Monmouth joined the CAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hawks took a seven-point lead into the first media timeout of the game. The Dragons finished the quarter with a 6-2 run to end the quarter and only trail by five heading into the second quarter. Baker scored a team-high 10 points in the quarter on 3-for-5.
The Dragons opened the second quarter on a seven-point run to take the lead, 22-20, leading to Monmouth using its first timeout of the game. The Dragons finished the half outscoring Monmouth, 16-4 in the quarter to take a seven-point lead into the second half. Amaris Baker paced the Dragons with 16 points. The Dragons finished the quarter on a 9-0 run and held Monmouth without a point for the final 6:25 of the quarter.
Each team scored 17 points in the third quarter. The Dragons shot 7-for-11 and made two treys to earn their points in the third. Monmouth shot 8-for-14 during the third to stay within seven of Drexel.
Monmouth outscored Drexel, 12-8 in the fourth quarter, and even took the lead with 2:32 left in the quarter. However, Drexel went on a 6-2 run in the final 2:00 minutes of the game to earn the three-point victory. Baker sunk two free throws with 45 seconds left to give Drexel the lead. Rullo also was successful on a pair of free throws to secure the victory for Drexel.
