Former Drexel field hockey standout Susan Ciufo enters her second season on the staff of head coach Denise Zelenak in 2014. Ciufo returns to University City after a two-year stint as an assistant at Lehigh University.
While at Lehigh, Ciufo was the recruiting and offensive coordinator. She guided one forward to the 2011 Patriot League First Team and led two forwards to First Team honors in 2012. Ciufo also spent a month as the interim head coach for the Mountain Hawks.
Ciufo has also coached extensively for USA Field Hockey. This year, she was an assistant coach for the Southeastern PA Futures Elite Academy site. In 2011, Ciufo served as an assistant coach at site 5A, one of two Level 1 sites in PA. In 2011 and 2012, she served as Head Coach of the USA Futures site 5G. Three years prior, Ciufo helped guide the futures at the Delaware site.
The 2010 Drexel graduate started all four years and competed in 84 games at forward. She ranks second in school history with 58 career goals and 140 career points. She was named First Team All-CAA and First Team Regional All-America as a sophomore, junior and senior. In 2008, Ciufo set the NCAA record with a 22 game points streak and received Third Team All-America honors. She helped the Dragons earn an at-large bid in the 2009 NCAA Tournament. The 2009 team won the CAA Championship regular-season title and advanced to the tile game again in 2010.
Ciufo is a three-time member of the U.S. National Indoor Team. This past year, she helped the squad place first at the 2013 Austria Tour. She also participated in the 2012 Scotland Tour. In 2009 and 2010, Ciufo competed with the New Jersey High Performance Team prior to joining the Pennsylvania squad in 2012.
Ciufo, a four-time CAA Scholar-Athlete honoree, graduated with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She is also working towards her master's degree in sports management at Drexel University.
