Defense Leads Drexel Past Delaware, 55-44
1/21/2006 12:00:00 AM
Drexel led by eight entering the second half, but Delaware (5-12, 1-7) opened the half with an 18-9 run to take their first lead of the game. Eight points during the run came off of turnovers as the Blue Hens trap was effective inside on the Drexel big men.
The first half was all Drexel. Delaware got on the board first at the 19:06 mark, but Drexel held the Blue Hens without a point for more than 11 minutes. Delaware's 12 points in the first 20 minutes tied the second-lowest output by a Drexel opponent in a half since 1947. The Dragons held Old Dominion to 10 points in the first half earlier this season. Delaware made just one of its first 17 field-goal attempts and finished the half shooting just 21 percent. However, the Dragons were unable to build more of a lead as they shot just 24 percent in the half.
Chaz Crawford (Philadelphia, Pa./Hargrave Military Academy) came off the bench to record 12 rebounds, eight on the offensive end, and a pair of blocks. It was the fourth time in the last six games that Crawford has had 12 rebounds. Mejia led Drexel with 17 points, but was just 4-for-15 from the floor. All four of his field goals were three-pointers.
Harding Nana led the Blue Hens with 13 points, but was held to 6-for-15 from the floor. Herb Courtney had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Drexel will conclude its three-game homestand on Monday night against Towson.
