Drexel Opens Season With Team Victories Over Howard

Philadelphia, Pa. – The Dragons began the 2006-07 swimming and diving season with victories in the men's and women's team competition on Saturday afternoon at Drexel Pool. The Dragon men finished with 166 points to Howard's 95, and the women defeated Howard, 158-118. The Dragon men won 10 events and the women finished first in eight different events.
Leading the men's squad was sophomore Cem Karali who earned four first-place finishes. Karali touched the wall first in the 50 backstroke (25.92), 100 backstroke (56.30) and helped Drexel's 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay teams place first. Freshman Mert Karsiyakalilar also earned multiple first-place finishes, with victories in the 50 butterfly (23.61), 100 butterfly (51.48) and the 200 medley relay. Other individual event winners for the Dragons were freshman Matthew Tannenbaum in the 1000 freestyle (11:17.36) and junior Gokhan Hulagu in the 500 freestyle (5:02.45).
The Dragons swept the diving events in both men's and women's competition. Senior Brett Molash earned top honors in the 1- and 3- meter events with sophomore Jake Roberson grabbing runner up honors in the 1 meter dive. In women's 1- and 3- meter diving competition, Sophomore Kate Hynes and senior Stephanie Battaglia finished one-two, respectively.
The Dragon women swam to top finish against Howard in the 200 freestyle relay with Katie McCann, Maureen Hanlon, Caitlin Mulholland and Sarah Keeley teaming up to complete the race in 1:43.39 to beat Howard, who finished in 1:47.06. Keeley notched an individual win in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.19) as did Alison Augustyn in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 32.85 and junior Katelyn Muenker swam to the fastest time of the day in the 100 backstroke (1:05.96).
In the freestyle events, McCann won the 200 freestyle (1:57.47) and in the 1000 freestyle, senior Courtney Dantone earned first place with a time of 11:20.16.
The Dragons will be back in action next weekend when they travel to the Colonial Athletic Association Pod Meet, hosted by George Mason. The meet begins on Friday, Nov. 3 at 4 p.m. and Saturday's competition will start at 11 a.m.
