Hofstra Ends Drexel's Win Streak With 1-0 Defeat

Philadelphia, Pa. – On a rainy night at Vidas Field Hofstra's Justin Flood found Chris Cox in the 72nd minute for the only goal of the match as the Pride (4-8-2, 3-4) washed away Drexel's seven-match winning streak, handing the Dragons (9-3-2, 6-1) a 1-0 defeat.
The Dragons made the three-time defending CAA Tournament champions earn their win, as the current conference leader put two excellent shots on goal in the first half and launched into fury of offensive attacks after falling behind with 18 minutes to play. Pride keeper Tom Johansen made both of his stops in the first half and Hofstra's defense dispatched the remainder of Drexel's shots.
Drexel had its best chance at an equalizer with 4:18 remaining, when the Dragons earned a foul on the left side of the goal box about 10 yards out near the sideline. Anthony Bafile took the free kick and served it to the far right side. Mark Stevenson connected on a header but Hofstra cleared the ball out of the box.
Drexel set the pace early on in the match when Nate Baker flicked a heal pass to a cutting Anthony Bafile who blasted a shot on goal, testing Hofstra keeper Tom Johansen on a rainy, wet night. Johansen was equal to the task, making the save.
Hofstra struck back by earning a free kick just outside the goal box in the ninth minute. Drexel's defense broke up the kick and also held off the ensuing corner kick, but the Pride controlled the pace of the first half from that point on, dominating headers at midfield and possessing the ball for much of the period.
Bafile, who has been one of Drexel's main offensive weapons this season, showed that he has equally fortuitous timing on defense as Hofstra found a clean shot off a cornerkick in the 26th minute with keeper Cory Robertson on the other side of the goal. But the Pride blast found only the foot of Bafile who stood his ground on the goal line for the clear.
The Dragons had another scoring chance near the end of the half when Greg Ermold unleashed a shot to the upper corner of the goal, Johansen snared it and held on for his second save of the period.
Drexel outshot Hofstra 10-7 in the match and earned three corner kicks to Hofstra's two. The loss snaps the Dragons' longest wining streak since 1998. The team will retain at least a tie for the CAA lead, however, as it heads to Northeastern for its Sunday meeting with the Huskies. Kickoff for that match is set for 1:00 p.m.
