Four Dragons Win Events at Hounds Invitational

Baltimore, Md. – The Drexel men's swimming and diving team competed in the Hounds Invitational hosted by Loyola College where three swimmers and one diver placed first among entrants from Marist, Delaware and the host school. As a team, Drexel lost to Delaware, 192-175, and dropped a 211-156 decision to Loyola. Marist defeated the Dragons, 194-175. The meet was the final event for the team until January of 2008.
Mert Karsiyakalilar (Istanbul, Turkey/Italian High School) won the 100 butterfly with a time of 51.36 with teammate Armagan Yavus (Istanbul, Turkey/Haydarpasa Lisesi) taking second place at 51.64. Craig Podgurski (Peoria, Ariz./Sunrise Mountain) won three freestyle events after touching the wall at 47.27 in the 100, 1:42.52 in the 200 and 4:37.40 in the 500. Gokhan Hulagu (Istanbul, Turkey/Sisli Anadolu) won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.51.
Drexel 800 free relay squad of Kivanc Altug (Edirne, Turkey/Suleyman Demirel Fen Lisesi), Matthew Fenn (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown West), Hulagu and Podgurski took second place, defeating Marist and Delaware. Adrian Sabovici (Maramures, Romania/Colegiul National Gheorghe Sihcai) defeated Delaware and Loyola with a second-place finish in the 1650 freestyle with a time of 16:31.59.
Diver Jake Roberson (Massillon, Ohio/Massillon Washington) won the 1-meter dive over all three schools posting a score of 278.14. He placed second in the 3-meter dive defeating Loyola and Delaware with a score of 249.80.
The Dragons will return to action Jan. 12, 2008 with a dual meet at Binghamton at 1:00 p.m.
