Ambler, Pa.- Drexel scored a goal late, but couldn't recover from a two-goal deficit and fell to cross-town rival Temple, 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Dragons (1-2) and Owls played even for the first 30 minutes before Temple (3-0-1) got on the board in the 34th minute. Junior Wendy Halina slipped by the defense on the right wing and put the ball to the right of diving Dragons' goalie Kaitlin Bond to put the Owls up 1-0. Temple struck again right after the teams began play in the second half. Katie Lynch scored on a one-timer from Halina on the right wing.
Drexel tried to mount a comeback late and got on the board in the 84th minute. Senior Aleka Yiantsos (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) drilled a shot from outside the 18 yard line that went just above the sprawling hands of Temple goalie Kara Williams. The goal gave Yiantsos 40 career points at Drexel, moving her into sole possession of third place in that category. She needs just three points to pass Katie Kane for first on the school's all-time scoring list.
Temple outshot Drexel 15-10. Bond made seven saves in the game for the Dragons, who are off until Friday when they travel to Rider.
