Dragons Pitch Second Half Shutout in 13-3 Win over Villanova

Villanova, Pa. – Drexel held Villanova scoreless in the second half as the Dragons picked up their third road victory of the season with a 13-3 win in a non-conference women's lacrosse game at Villanova Stadium. Gwenna Johnson (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) led the Drexel offense with four goals while Lauren LaBella (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) made eight saves and allowed just three goals in over 47 minutes of action in the cage. With the win, Drexel improved to 3-1 on the season while Villanova fell to 1-1.
Sarah Carter (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) put Drexel on the board less than two minutes into the game with a goal on a Katie Bradley (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) pass. The Wildcats tied the scored with a Taylor Lucy goal before a Jessica Bill (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Baldwinsville) tally started a 5-0 run by the Dragons that included a pair of scores from Kaitlin Keegan (Springfield, Pa./Springfield). Villanova scored two of the next three goals to cut the Drexel lead to 7-3. Johnson ended the half with two goals and the defense stiffened as the Wildcats would not score again.
No goals were scored in the second half until over 11 minutes elapsed when Bradley scored unassisted. With less than 12 minutes remaining, Johnson netted her fourth goal of the game as she converted a free-position shot. Mariana Uribe (Villanova, Pa./Notre Dame) and Nicole Adams (Jackson, N.J./Jackson) each tallied a goal to cap the game's scoring.
LaBella's performance in goal lowered her goals against average to 6.59 and raised her save percentage to .643 on the season. Whitney Johnson (Skaneateles, N.Y./Skaneateles) and Rachael Behrndt (Glenmoore, Pa./Downingtown East) each spelled LaBella in goal holding the Wildcats scoreless. For the game, Drexel outshot Villanova, 33-15, and earned 13 draw controls to the Wildcats' five.
The Dragons return to action Sunday, March 2 when Drexel will host George Washington at Vidas Field. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
