Men's Swimming Falls Short in Season Debut

Shippensburg, Pa. - Drexel men's swimming opened its 2009-10 season at Shippensburg where the Dragons dropped a 108-97 decision to the hosts in a dual meet. Transfer T.J. Southmayd was impressive in his Drexel debut winning the 200 IM and the 200 back while helping the 400 free relay team claim first place. Senior Mert Karsiyakalilar picked up a victory in the 200 fly with teammate Armagan Yavuz claiming second place in the event.
The 200 back event was dominated by the Dragons as freshman Dan Zalkind posted a time of 2:02.33 to finish behind only Southmayd's winning time of 2:00.09. Another Drexel newcomer finished in third place as Cole Gindhart clocked a 2:03.61. Karsiyakalilar posted a sub-two-minute time of 1:58.93 to win the 200 fly with Yavuz touching the wall just behind him at 2:00.51.
Drexel 400 free relay team of Southmayd, Adrian Sabovici, Gindhart and Karsiyakalilar picked up 11 team points with its first place finish at 3:19.69. The Dragons second quartet took runner-up to add four points to the Drexel total as Paul Bonnevie, Jesse McGrath, David Boodey and Yavuz posted a 3:21.72.
The Drexel men's swimming team will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 21 as the Dragons travel to Chester, Pa. to take on Widener. The meet will begin at 6:00 p.m.
