Men's Swimming Picks Up First Victory of the Season at Widener

Chester, Pa. - The Drexel men's swimming team outlasted Widener, 142-118, in a non-conference meet. The victory was the first for the Dragons who got strong performances from many swimmers as five different Drexel entrants picked up first-place finishes in individual events. The win moved Drexel to 1-1 on the season.
The Dragons opened the meet with a victory in the 200 medley relay as T.J. Southmayd, Sherif Madkour, Armagan Yavuz and Paul Bonnevie finished at 1:39.79 to give Drexel an early 11 points. From there the Dragons dominated as Adrian Sabovici took the next event, the 1000 free, with a time of 10:12.78. He touched the wall more than 24 seconds ahead of Widener's second-place finisher. Sabovici went on to add a victory in the 500 free event with a time of 4:57.81. Matthew Grooms picked up his first win of the season as he recorded a 1:50.07 in the 200 free. Drexel's senior transfer, Southmayd, continued his winning ways as he remained undefeated with two more victories. He took the 100 and 200 back with times of 54.69 and 1:58.08, respectively. Two other swimmers compiled two first-place finishes as Armagan Yavuz took the 100 and 200 fly while Sherif Madkour claimed the 100 and 200 breast.
The Dragons closed the meet with an exclamation point as the quartet of Southmayd, Sabovici, Jesse McGrath and Yavuz reeled in 11 more team points with a victory in the 400 free relay. The group's time of 3:16.47 was more than four seconds faster than Widener's second-place finish.
Drexel returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 24 for the Dragons' home-opener as La Salle visits Drexel Pool at 1:00 p.m.
