Wilmington, N.C. - In a contest that was rescheduled from a rain out on Sept. 26, Drexel will play the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington at noon today in North Carolina. The Dragons are trying to snap an eight game winless streak and hand the first-place Seahawks their first conference loss of the season. A victory would secure a top finish in regular season play for UNCW. Fans can follow the match via livestats by clicking here.
Teams: Drexel (1-7-1 CAA, 5-10-1) vs. UNC Wilmington (7-0-2 CAA, 11-2-3)
Venue: UNC Wilmington Soccer Stadium, Wilmington, N.C.
All-Time Series: UNCW leads 5-2-0
Last Meeting: In their previous match at Vidas Field, Drexel found disappointment after a promising start. The Dragons tallied three times during the match beginning with a goal from forward Mike Crosse that snapped a 500 minute goalless drought. Shortly after, Chris Schieve deposited a headed from Carlos Ruthner's cross that gave the Dragons a 2-1 lead going into the half. Wilmington twice came back from a two-goal deficit. The Seahawks' Devan Carroll scored just before the break to make it 2-1. Drexel's Todd Wampler scored in the 65th minute to make it a 3-1 match. Wilmington then tallied three unanswered goals, the last two of which were penalty kicks, to take the victory. The game winner was scored in the 99th minute off of the foot of UNCW's Daniel Roberts in a penalty kick situation. Roberts also capitalized on the PK opportunity that sent the game into golden goal overtime. Drexel senior keeper Cory Robertson made nine saves in the match while Wilmington's Brock Duckworth recorded two stops.
Entering the Game: Drexel was held off the board for the third time in conference play as the Dragons battled Old Dominion in Virginia on Friday night. The Monarch's Nane Joseph tallied one goal and two assists while goalie Evan Newton recorded five stops and the shutout as they lead their team to victory. Joseph opened the scoring late in the first half when he scored off a corner kick in the 43rd minute. Joseph then assisted Yannick Smith on the second goal just two minutes later before the break. The final mark was recorded in the 68th minute when Joseph sent a pass that deflected off a Dragon defender where it found Shane Howard who drilled it home. Freshman keeper Tres Heffron registered three saves for the Dragons in net.
Players to Watch: The absence of CAA Preseason Player of the Year Devon Carroll -who was suspended from the team just prior to the start of the season- has not slowed the Seahawks this season. A number of talented players, inlcuding returning CAA Defender of the Year Indy Smith, have elevated their level of play to lead the team to the top of the conference and a No. 23 national ranking, this season. On the defensive end, UNCW has allowed the fewest goals of any team in the conference this season. Keeper Brock Duckworth is leading the league in save percentage and saves per game and ranks 12th in the nation with a .871 save percentage. Junior forward Tyler Wheaton leads the Seahawks with five goals and three assists.
Senior Midfielder Fabio Assumpcao will be playing his last road match with the Dragons. Offensively, Assumpcao leads Drexel's squad with 17 points tallied from seven goals and three assists. Assumpcao is most dangerous on set pieces as he has accumulated more than half of his goals from penalty kicks and free kicks this season.
Up Next: The Dragons wrap up their season back home with Senior Night at Vidas Field against William & Mary. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. Drexel will thank five seniors for their service to the squad with accolades beginning 20 minutes prior to the match.
