Wilmington, N.C. - Playing to clinch the CAA regular-season championship, UNC Wilmington came out with vigor in a 5-0 victory over Drexel on Monday afternoon. The match was played as the rain date for a contest originally scheduled for Sept. 26 that would have been the CAA opener for both teams. Since then the squads' paths have diverged as Drexel (5-11-1, 1-8-1 CAA) looks to wrap up its season against William & Mary on Friday and the Seahawks 12-2-3 (8-0-2 CAA) are looking to close out an undefeated conference season and enter the conference tournament as the top seed.
Etienne Boulinger scored twice for the Seahawks, who led 3-0 in the first half and kept adding to the lead in the second period. Drexel outshot UNCW 16-14 in the match and 9-8 in shots on goal. But the Seahawks' keeper Brock Duckworth made nine stops to earn the shutout. Tim Washam saved three and let in five in his fourth start of the season.
Brian Harrison opened scoring for UNCW when he scored off a corner kick taken by Tyler Wheaton in the 25th minute. Harrison set up the second goal of the match, a strike by Daniel Roberts from the right side, in the 32nd minute.
Boulinger scored the first of his two goals less than two minutes before halftime on a well-struck shot from 18 yards out that was set up by Seph Babington, giving UNCW a 3-0 lead.
Three minutes into the second half, the Seahawks struck again when Kirk Hudgins intercepted a ball and split Drexel's defenders for a shot that made it 4-0. Boulinger capped scoring the 77th minute when the knocked home the rebound off his own shot to make it a 5-0 UNCW match.
Drexel will close out its 2009 campaign against William & Mary on Friday at 7:00 p.m. under the lights of Vidas Field. Seniors Greg Ermold, Fabio Assumpcao, Alex Reber, Cole Feffer and Mike Crosse will be honored prior to the contest as part of Senior Night ceremonies.
