Seton Hall Sneaks Past Drexel in Opening Game of UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament

Baltimore, Md. - Drexel fought off a potent Seton Hall offense through six innings, stranding eight Pirates on base to keep the game tied at 2-2, but a miscue in the bottom of the seventh inning cost the Dragons (1-5) in a tough 3-2 loss to open the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament. Rookie Hillary Allen turned in a quality pitching performance to keep the Pirates (3-7) at bay, and she also provided her own run support with a two-run homer in the first inning.
Allen staked her team to a 2-0 lead in the Dragons' second at bat of the game. Lisa Williams got on base after being hit by a pitch and Allen blasted her first career home run. From the circle, Allen allowed two earned runs on 10 hits and three walks. She stranded eight runners on base and struck out two.
Seton Hall chipped into the lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the first and the Pirates tied the game in the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles that knotted the game at 2-2.
The Dragons had an opportunity to take back the lead in the top of the seventh inning when Paige Collings led off with a single to center field. Pinch runner Devon Metcalf swiped second and advanced to third on a fly ball by Rodriguez. After a walk by Kelly Downes, Kristen Beaver popped up an attempted squeeze play, which led to a double-play as the Pirates' first baseman gloved the pop and doubled up Metcalf charging in from third base to end the inning.
The Hall delivered the winning run in the final frame when its No. 2 batter reached on an effor by Downes at second base. She stole second and scored aon a two-out single to left field to end the game.
Allen drops to 0-2 on the season with the loss. For Seton Hall, Danielle Zanzalari picked up the win after allowing two runs on three hits in six and one-third innings from the mound. She walked three and struckout four. The Dragons are back in action tomorrow at the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament when they face Marist at 9:00 a.m.
