Men's Swimming & Diving Defeats Howard, Falls to UMBC

Baltimore, Md. - Drexel men's swimming & diving dropped Howard, 114-83, while losing to UMBC, 161-130, in a pair of duals held on the campus of UMBC. Sherif Madkour won the 100 and 200 breast along with the 200 IM while Mert Karsiyakalilar won the 100 fly. Junior Ian Jevnick swept both diving events while recording a season best on the 1-meter board.
In the first individual event of the meet, Adrian Sabovici took second to UMBC's Mat Carson in the 1000 free as the senior posted a time of 9:55.25. Freshman Danny Durazo took fourth overall and topped all Howard entrants with his finish in 10:32.87 in his first appearance in the 1000 free this season. In the following event, Cole Gindhart registered a season-best 1:49.52 in the 200 free to take fourth place. Daniel Zalkind also took fourth place as he posted a 56.14 in the 100 back as he finished behind three UMBC swimmers in the event. The Dragons got a resounding victory from Madkour who beat all entrants from UMBC and Howard when he clocked a 58.88 in the 100 breast to win by 1.28 seconds. Karsiyakalilar placed second, behind a UMBC swimmer, in the 200 fly with a time of 1:56.38 while T.J. Southmayd finished behind Karsiyakalilar and two Retrievers to take fourth place with a time of 1:57.29. In the 200 back, Southmayd placed second overall with a time of 1:57.15. Madkour followed with his second win of the day as he cruised to victory by 3.56 seconds in the 200 breast witha time of 2:06.34.
Sabovici picked up his second runner-up finish in a distance event when he clocked a 4:49.60 in the 500 free. Karsiyakalilar followed with a win in the 100 fly at 51.67 as his time was 0.57 seconds better than UMBC's Zachary Vonder Harr. Madkour racked up his third triumph of the day with a time of 1:56.72 in the 200 IM with Southmayd finishing second at 1:57.46.
In diving action, Jevnick posted a season-best 329.78 on the 1-meter board to cruise to victory by more than 60 points. Freshman Stephen Cal took third with a score of 253.28. On the 3-meter board, it was more dominance from Jevnick as won with a total of 282.60 with Cal again taking third place with a score of 239.63.
The Dragons return to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 with a 1:00 p.m. meet at rival Delaware.
