Box Score
Newark, Del. – A late rally by the Dragons came up just short in a 2-1 loss to Delaware (3-7-1, 2-3) in men's soccer action on Wednesday. Drexel (6-5-1, 2-3) was unable to recover from a 2-0 deficit early in the second half. Nate Baker scored the Dragons' lone goal in the loss.
Delaware opened scoring in the match 34th minute with Mike White scoring his first career goal off a set up by Kyle Ellis. Ellis carried the ball in the middle of the box before sliding it to the right where White finished it low on the left side to put the Hens on top 1-0.
Within the first 13 minutes of the second half, Delaware built its lead to 2-0 on a header by Jon Scheer off a high cross from Ellis.
Manuel Cazares found Nate Baker in the 77th minute off a corner kick. Baker's score made it a 2-1 match. While the goal drew the match tighter, it was not enough to rally the Dragons from behind.
The Dragons nearly found the equalizer in the waning seconds of the match on a shot that rebounded off the post and required a scrambling Kris Devaux to smother before Drexel could punch home a rebound.
Devaux made two saves in the match while Drexel's Pentti Pussinen made four stops between the pipes for the Dragons.
Delaware outshot Drexel 14-11, but the Dragons earned five corner kicks to the Hens' three.
The Dragons return to Vidas Field on Saturday to play against Georgia State at 3:00 p.m.
