Box Score
Philadelphia – Drexel scored four second-half goals to pick up its first CAA victory of the season, 4-1, over George Mason. Malcolm LeBourne scored twice for the Dragons in the first three minutes of the second half. Nate Baker added a goal and an assist in the match. The win is Drexel's first in five matches and snaps a four-game losing skid.
Drexel outshot Mason 14-10 and scored on four of its eight shots on goal. Both teams had seven corner kicks. Pentti Pussinen made two saves for the Dragons while Sean Cote, who was tested all night, had four saves for the Patriots.
After a playing to a scoreless draw in the first half, the Dragons exploded for two goals in first six minutes of the second period. Malcolm LeBourne scored the first two goals just under two minutes apart from each other, and Nate Baker put in the third.
Ken Tribbett connected with LeBourne to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the second half. Tribbett's ball, threaded from the center, found a cutting LeBourne who wove his way into the box and took a shot that deflected off Cote's hands and bounced into the net.
Just a minute and a half later Baker sprung LeBourne with a well-place pass to the left side of the goal box. LeBourne took two touches and evaded a Mason defender to the center of the goal while freezing the Patriots' keeper and sliding a shot back to the near post to put the Dragons up 2-0.
Baker deposited the Dragons' third goal himself in the 53rd minute off a restart at midfield. Anthony Bafile sent a ball from the sideline at midfield to Baker, who connected with a header that put the Dragons on top 3-0.
George Mason found a goal of its own in the 66th minute. Ernesto Marquez cleaned up a failed clearance by the Drexel defense and took a dribble to the right before sneaking a shot past the Dragons' Pentti Pussinen on the right side.
Baker nearly found a second score with 11 minutes left in the match when he outsprinted his defender to a ball played to space and caught the ball in stride for a shot lifted to the left side that went far of the goal.
From that point the play of the game opened and the Dragons generated a number of break-away scoring opportunities. In the final three minutes substitute Mark Donohue nearly chipped in a shot from 15 yards out on a break.
A minute later Donohue blasted a shot from 20 yards out to the right side that ricocheted off the post and bounced back to the left of the goal where Nathan Page knocked the rebound into an open net for the final 4-1 margin.
The Dragons return to the field on Sunday when they travel to play Towson at 1:00 p.m.
