Philadelphia - Drexel men's soccer plays host to the George Mason Patriots tonight under the Vidas Field lights looking to snap a four-match losing skid and put its first mark in the conference win column this season. The Patriots enter the match in a similar situation, sitting at 0-1-1 in CAA play and 4-3-1 overall and coming off a 1-0 loss to VCU last Saturday. Opening kick is set for 7:00 p.m. at Vidas Field on 43rd and Powelton Ave. Fans can also track the match via live stats by clicking here.
In the Dragons' last match, on Saturday, Oct. 2, the team was edged out 1-0 by the UNC Wilmington Seahawks. Michael Parrish gave the Seahawks the decisive goal when, in the 20th minute, he tidied up a Dragons' miss-clear by plucking the ball out of the air at the top of the box tucking it just over keeper Pentti Pussinen and just under the crossbar.
The Dragons fought back and where knocking on the door step when forward Nate Baker slid a pass to the right side of the box where Nathan Page controlled it, set himself up and fired just wide into the side netting. The Seahawks outshot the Dragons 14-10 and Brock Duckworth made two saves to Pussinen's six, earning his fifth shutout on the season in net for UNC Wilmington.
George Mason took a 1-0 loss in its last match on a goal surrendered to Virginia Commonwealth in the 83rd minute of play. Jake Van Yahres scored the big goal for the Rams off a feed from Jose Carlo Castillo. The Patriots put three shots on goal in the final seven minutes in hopes of equalizing, but the VCU defense was equal to each challenge.
Last Meeting: Drexel fell to George Mason in another rainy match on Vidas Field, 3-1. The Patriots scored early when, in the second minute, Ernesto Marquez struck a free-kick from the right corner of the box that found its way past a diving Tres Heffron for the first of his two goals. Taylor Brophy evened the match at one for the Dragons with his first career goal, assisted by Skylar Olsen who picked up his first collegiate point on the play as well. Heffron made three stops for Drexel while George Mason's Sean Kelley stopped one while allowing one as he recorded the win.
All-Time Record: George Mason leads 6-3-1
Key Players: Nate Baker leads the Dragons in assists with four on the season. Baker's most recent set-up was just shy of finding the game-tying goal against UNCW on Saturday when he found Nathan Page with a feed into the box. Page controlled the ball, turned and fired but was just wide of the post sending the ball into the side netting. George Mason's Sean Cote sits second in the CAA in save percentage with a .865. Cote has also recorded two shut-outs this season stopping a total of 32 attempts on net.
