Philadelphia - Junior Ashley Santee scored with less than 13 minutes remaining to break a 2-2 tie and send No. 20 Drexel past No. 19 Old Dominion, 3-2, at Buckley Field. The win moved the Dragons to a perfect 4-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association and 9-3 overall while the Lady Monarchs fell to 6-7 overall and 3-1 in the CAA. Amanda Fleischut scored a goal and assisted on Santee's game-winner while Loran Hatch scored both Old Dominion goals.
Drexel got on the board early when Susan Ciufo found Fleischut near the top of the circle. Fleischut dribbled the ball to her right before unleashing a shot the rattled the back of the cage. Eight minutes later, Christina Mastropaolo picked up a loose ball on the defensive half of the field and headed toward the offensive end. The senior dribbled through four Old Dominion defenders before sending a pass down the sideline to a streaking Ciufo. The forward one-timed the ball to Jen Cairone who was alone in front of the cage with the goalie. Cairone sent a shot that was saved by the blocker of Devon Seifert but the ball squirted toward the right side of the cage. After a wild scramble for the ball, Cairone made a diving effort to touch the ball into the cage and give Drexel a 2-0 lead. The game appeared to be headed to halftime with that score until Hatch unleashed a shot on a penalty corner that she took directly from the inserter with just 29 seconds left in the half.
It was Hatch who completed Old Dominion's comeback when she rocketed a shot in the cage on a penalty corner that was inserted by Paige Clutter and stick-stopped by Alyschia Conn with just less than 16 minutes left in the game. With Old Dominion taking the momentum, it was Fleischut who stunned the visitors as she dribbled from the top of the circle to her left and ripped a reverse shot that found the stick of Santee in front who sent the ball high into the middle of the net at 57:18. The Drexel defense made the goal stand up as the Dragons grabbed first place and the inside track on the regular season CAA Championship and the right to host the 2010 CAA Championships.
Jenna Phillips made four saves for Drexel while Seifert stopped five shots for Old Dominion. The Lady Monarchs outshot the Dragons, 15-12, and earned 10 penalty corners to the Dragons' three.
Drexel will look to complete the weekend when the Dragons host William & Mary on Sunday at noon.
