Jacksonville, Fla. - Rookie Hanna Parrish hit her first career home run to fuel a Drexel comeback bid against a Virginia Tech (2-1) team that is one year removed from dealing the U.S. National Team its first domestic loss ever. But the Dragons' (1-2) rally came up just short in a 5-3 loss to the Hokies at the Jacksonville University Tournament.
Parrish was 2-for-4 in the contest with a two-run blast in the top of the seventh. Starter Ellen Boundy held the Hokies in check through three innings, allowing one run on three hits and three walks before being relieved by freshman Shayann Beach in the fourth inning.
Virginia Tech capitalized on a pair of Drexel errors in the fiftth inning to score four unearned runs and take a 5-0 lead against Beach and the Dragons.
Drexel got one run back in the sixth inning with three straight singles to lead off the frame. Paige Collings singled to left field to bring Parrish in from third base to make it a 5-1 game.
Beach sandwiched a pair of strikeouts around a good throw from Ashley Botelho to Caprice DeMirjian to catch a would-be base thief at second, holding the Hokies off the board in the inning.
Rachel Campbell singled to left field before Parrish rapped her round-tripper to make it 5-3. Rookie Caitlyn Gravenor followed with a single and Collings reached on an error by relief pitcher Kenzie Roark, bringing the go-ahead run to the plate in the person of slugger Ashley Botelho. The Dragons' co-leader in career homers would put a charge into the ball, but it would fall short, landing in the glove of centerfielder Richelle McGarva to end the game.
The Dragons now face Bethune Cookman at 11:00 p.m. to finish out the Jacksonville Tournament.
