Dragons' Undefeated Mark Spoiled Against No. 3 Penn, 14-7

Philadelphia - Drexel dropped its first game of the season as No. 3 Penn broke open a tight game in the second half to pull away with a 14-7 victory. The loss dropped the Dragons to 4-1 on the season while Penn, who has gone to the last three NCAA Final Fours, moved to 1-0. Katie Lawson led the Dragons with three scores while Ali DeLuca tallied six times.
DeLuca opened the game's scoring just under three minutes into the game but less than a minute later Charlotte Wood took a Becca Drylie-Perkins pass and beat Quakers' goalie Emily Szelest to tie the game. Penn again looked to pull away as DeLuca used another great individual effort to fire a shot that found the net. Wood once again responded for Drexel as she connected on a free-position shot with just under 18 minutes remaining. With just over 14 minutes left in the period, Katie Blazer was awarded a free-position shot and a chance to put the Dragons on top. Blazer fired a shot but was turned away by Szelest but Blazer picked up the rebound and immediately fired another shot with this one finding the back of the net. Penn was able to recover as the Quakers put together a three-goal run before Lawson scored with 4:32 to go to bring Drexel back to within a goal at 5-4. With just 1:35, Emma Spiro scored the last goal of the half to put the Quakers on top by two at the half.
Neither team was able to score in the first nine minutes of the second half but Penn finally halted the scoreless streak with a goal from Caroline Bunting. With less than 15 minutes remaining in the game, Drexel trailed by just three goals but the Quakers put together four goals in less than five minutes to give them an 11-4 advantage and seal the game. Katie Lawson scored twice with Sam Berger contributing a goal in the final seven minutes to cap the Dragons' scoring.
Penn outshot Drexel, 31-14, and won 15 of the game's 22 draws. Whitney Johnson allowed nine goals while making seven saves and was relieved by Rachael Behrndt with just less than 13 minutes remaining. Behrndt make one save and allowed the final five goals of the game. Szelest made three saves in earning the victory.
