Philadelphia - Following a tough 2-1 extra-inning loss to Saint Joseph's yesterday, the Dragons will look for a quick bounce back against another Philadelphia rival as Drexel (12-15) plays host to the La Salle Explorers this afternoon. The Explorers, under the guidance of Drexel alums Head Coach Brianne Brown ('07) and Assistant Coach Molly Dacey ('08), are 10-18 on the season and have won three of five entering today's 3:00 p.m. doubleheader.
The Dragons fell victim to an unusual miscue in Wednesday's 2-1 nine-inning loss to Saint Joseph's. With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the ninth, the Hawks bunted Rochelle Christman from second to third. Devon Metcalf fielded the ball, wheeled around and threw it to shortstop Hanna Parrish covering the bag. Christman slid in under the tag, but when Parrish was tossing the ball back to pitcher Hillary Allen it tipped off her glove and trickled away toward the first base line. Christman alertly scampered home before any of the Dragons could pick up the lose ball and make a play. While the game was played at Drexel Field, it was a home game for the Hawks -who are without a home field this season as construction gets underway for a new on-campus facility. Christman's run therefore served as the game-ender as the stunned Dragons and fans looked on.
In the contest, which was in large part a pitchers duel, Drexel senior Ashley Botelho connected with her fifth home run of the season, which also made her the first player in program history with 100 career RBIs. The solo shot tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh inning.
La Salle is coming off a doubleheader split against UMBC on Tuesday. Mary Pat Conville bolstered her team-leading .371 batting average with a four-hit performance on the day. Ali Shepherd went 2-for-4 with her second homer of the season in the Explorers' 2-0 game-one victory. DJ Guinn got the complete-game shutout victory for La Salle. Guinn has been the Explorers' top pitcher this season, with a 4-3 record and a 2.06 earned-run average. Gina Massaro has also been having a strong season from the circle. She leads the team with 57 strikeouts in 68 innings of work, boasts a 2.55 ERA and opponents are batting just .213 against her this year.
Drexel leads the all-time series with La Salle 24-19 and the Dragons won last year's meeting 2-1. Hillary Allen pitched her way to a complete-game win and Katy Harrington drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly.
Parking and admission are free at the Vidas Athletic Complex on 43rd and Powelton Ave. Drexel Field is located in the northwest corner of the Complex.
