Philadelphia - Drexel softball will take its final swings of a nine-game homestand this weekend when the Dragons (13-16, 3-6) host the Patriots of George Mason (13-17, 3-6) in a three-game conference series. The important series will help to sort out a three-way tie between Drexel, Mason and Delaware in the CAA standings. Opening pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 11:00 a.m. at Drexel Field.
The Dragons went 1-2 during mid-week play and are coming off a 3-1 win over La Salle on Thursday. Katrina Gaudier came up with the complete-game victory to help right the ship after a 4-1 loss in the opening game. The senior hurler did not allow an earned run or walk a batter in seven innings of work.
Also during the week, senior Ashley Botelho hit her fifth homer of the season to become the first player in Drexel history to drive in 100 runs in her career. Botelho moved into the top 5 all-time at Drexel in career hits this week and she is three shy of taking over sole possession of second place on the prestigious list.
The Dragons will send pitching ace Hillary Allen to the circle this weekend. Allen was charged with a pair of tough losses this week. She did not allow an earned run in two and two-thirds innings of relief on Wednesday against Saint Joseph's but took the loss after a bizzare throwing error allowed the winning run to come home in the bottom of the ninth inning. Against La Salle on Thursday Allen allowed four runs on 10 hits and four walks in seven innings. Prior to that outing she had not walked a batter in four games. Allen is leading the Drexel staff with a 7-7 record and a 2.14 ERA.
George Mason comes into the weekend playing some of its best softball of the season. The Patriots have won four of their last five games including a win over George Washington in their most recent contest and a 2-1 CAA series win against Towson last weekend. CAA Pitcher of the Week Becky Anderson has been sensational for the Patriots of late. Anderson went 3-0 last week with three shutouts, including a 12-inning blanking of Towson. Anderson is second in the CAA with a 1.26 ERA and she has allowed just 54 base runners in 72 innings from the circle this season.
At the plate, Rachel Davies is the Patriots' top hitter. She is batting .301 on the season with two homers and 13 RBIs. Like Drexel, George Mason has counted on quality pitching to win games this season. The Patriots are batting just .215 as a team on the year, which is the lowest batting average in the CAA, but their pitching staff has the fifth best ERA in the conference and has surrendered the fewest walks in the league this year.
Drexel is 13-13 all-time against George Mason. The Dragons swept Mason on the road last year with Hillary Allen picking up all three pitching victories in the series.
Parking and admission are free at the Vidas Athletic Complex located on 43rd and Powelton Ave. Drexel Field is located in the northwest corner of the complex.
