Philadelphia - No. 6 UConn broke open a tied game with two quick second-half goals before pulling away late to defeat No. 14 Drexel, 4-0. The Huskies had four different players score goals while Susan Ciufo fired a game-high five shots for the Dragons. The win moved UConn to 6-1 on the season while Drexel fell to 3-3.
A standing-room only crowd saw a scoreless first half that saw both teams squander scoring opportunities. UConn's Jestine Angelini fired a shot directly off of a penalty corner that Drexel goalie Jenna Phillips dove to send wide of the net. Ciufo found herself alone with UConn goalie Sarah Mansfield after Ciufo picked off a pass in the circle. Mansfield charged Ciufo and the senior was able to send the ball toward the cage but it drifted wide right of the goal. The Huskies held a slim 7-6 edge in shots in the first half.
The Huskies erupted early in the second half with two goals in a 16-second span. Less than two minutes into the second period, Ali Blankmeyer deflected a pass from Alicia Angelini that found the back of the cage. Anne Jeute raced in on Phillips alone just seconds later and fired a shot that hit the charging goalie but the ball still found the back netting. Melissa Gonzalez scored the second goal as she took a shot off of a penalty corner that deflected off of a Drexel player and looped up and over Phillips. Marie Elena Bolles completed the game's scoring with a goal on a breakaway as she fired a hard shot that split the legs of Phillips. Drexel's best scoring opportunity came when Ciufo dribbled toward the cage and was fouled. The referee awarded the Dragons a penalty stroke but Sofia Sanguinetti's shot struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced out.
UConn held an 18-13 edge in shots and a 9-4 margin in penalty corners. Both Phillips and Mansfield made six saves on the day.
