Delaware Defeats Drexel Field Hockey, 3-0

Newark, Del. – The Delaware Blue Hens defeated Drexel, 3-0, in a tightly contested women's field hockey game held at Rullo Stadium. Both squads were unable to put points on the board in the first, but Delaware's three-goal spurt in the final half was enough to beat the Dragons. The Blue Hens outshot Drexel, 13-12, and had five penalty corners to the Dragons' three. The loss dropped Drexel 10-6 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
At 4:49 in the second half, senior goalkeeper Kim Chiarelli blocked Delaware's Nicole Onorato shot, but was unable to stop Amanda McCardell who picked up the rebound and quickly found the back of the cage. McCardell broke the scoreless tie and gave the Blue Hens the first lead of the game, 1-0.
Drexel continued to put pressure on the Blue Hens, but Delaware's Kelsey Prettyman broke through the defense and scored a fast break goal. The Dragons were down by two, 2-0. With just under two minutes left, McCardell scored her second goal and secured the win. The Blue Hens held onto the three-goal lead, 3-0, until the time expired.
Senior Kim Chiarelli posted six saves. She now has 44 on the season. Delaware's Noelle Diana also made six stops for the win.
The Dragons travels to the reigning national champion's turf, No. 3 Maryland, on Wednesday.
