Philadelphia – No. 6 Penn edged the Drexel women 12-9 in a tightly contested women's lacrosse game. The Dragons came back to tie the game at halftime, but the Quakers would outscore the Dragons 8-5 in the second half to pull out the victory. Junior Charlotte Wood led the Dragons with three goals, she now leads the team with 12 on the season.
Penn's Caroline Bunting scored in the opening minutes of the game. Drexel's Charlotte Wood answered back to tie the game, 1-1. The Dragons were down 4-1, but started a three goal rally after Kaitlin Harris's goal. Alyse Maiden's free position goal with just 18 seconds left on the clock tied the game, 4-4, at half.
Drexel was able to take the lead, 6-5, after Maiden dished off a pass to Emily Kane for a goal in the second half. Penn's Erin Brennan put Penn ahead, 8-7, from a free position goal. The Quakers followed with three more goals, and secured the lead for the remainder of the game. Senior goalkeeper Whitney Johnson finished with 10 saves.
The Drexel women's lacrosse team hosts Bucknell University on March 6 at Vidas Field. Sunday's game will be the first of six straight home contests for the Dragons.
