Big Third Inning Gives Dragons 12-1 Run-Rule Victory Over Coppin State

Baltimore, Md. - Drexel plated nine runs in the third inning while batting around on the Coppin State Eagles to set up a 12-1 win in five innings. Jenn Reading went 2-for-4 in the game with four RBIs and her first home run of the season. The Dragons improve to 6-7 overall with the win and 3-0 at the UMBC Dawg Pound Tournament.
Shelby Taylor took the ball for Drexel in its third game at the UMBC Tournament. The rookie delivered the victory, letting up one earned run on six hits through five innings and striking out two batters.Heather Josker took the loss for Coppin State. She allowed 10 runs, but only one of them was earned as the Eagles committed three errors in the field behind her.
Taylor drove in a run with single in the first inning to help her cause. The Dragons would hang nine more on the Eagles in the third inning to take a 10-0 lead before Coppin State made it to the batters box for the second time.
The Dragons batted around with Reading, Taylor, Katy Harrington, Rachel Campbell and Laura Stagliano driving in runs.
Coppin State got its lone run of the game in the bottom of the second on a two-out RBI single by Erica Washngton.
Rookie outfielder Comfort Ahonkhai did her best to keep the Eagles off the board in the bottom of the third when she made a catch in left field and fired the ball home to catch and threw home to catch Carmen Frazier at home plate to end the inning.
Reading ripped her first homer of the season in the top of the fifth with Kelly Downes on base to give Drexel its final margin of victory.
The Dragons will look to complete a sweep of the UMBC field with games against Niagara and UMBC on Sunday.
