Baltimore, Md. – Hillary Allen homered twice, drove in four runs and earned the pitching victory for Drexel (5-7) in a 11-3 win over the host UMBC Retrievers at the Dawg Pound Classic. Senior Rachel Campbell also ticketed a pair of round-trippers in the game, including her first career home run which came in the third inning.
Campbell hit a solo shot and Allen cranked a three-run homer, her second of the game, to hang four runs on UMBC in the sixth inning and put the game in line for an early ending.
Allen closed out the run-rule victory in the bottom of the frame, retiring the Retrievers in order to pick up her fourth win of the season. The junior hurler scattered six hits over six innings, walked three and struck out five while allowing just one earned run.
Stephanie Weigman took the loss for UMBC despite striking out eight batters. She allowed three earned runs on seven hits and three walks through five innings. Kayla Martinez let up four runs in the sixth inning on three hits, two of them homers.
Drexel scored in five of the game's six innings, putting 11 runs across the plate on 10 hits in one of the team's best offensive performances of the young season.
The Dragons held a 2-1 lead by the third inning thanks to some aggressive base running by Caprice DeMirjian in the second inning and Campbell's solo shot in the top of the third.
UMBC put one on the board in the second inning courtesy of an RBI double by Becca Bernheimer.
Drexel broke the game open in the fourth inning with three runs on two hits and two errors by the Retrievers. Devon Metcalf and Comfort Ahonkhai reached on errors to start the inning and stole bases. Amanda Bachmann singled to bring both runners home, she later came in to score on a single to right field by Jenn Reading.
Bernheimer drove in two more runs for her team in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 5-3 game. But the game quickly became out of reach for the home team when Allen tagged a two-run homer in the fifth inning and matched blasts with Campbell in the four-run sixth inning.
Drexel plays a nightcap against Coppin State at 5:00 p.m. before closing out the tournament with a doubleheader against UMBC and Niagara on Sunday.
