Softball Drops First Game at UMBC Dawg Pound Classic, 5-1 to Niagara

Baltimore, Md. - After three straight wins, Drexel lost its first game at the UMBC Dawg Pound Classic, falling 5-1 to Niagara. Kim Bryson hurled a one-hitter against the Dragons (6-8) with Paige Collings recording the lone hit and driving in Drexel's only run of the game. The Dragons close out play in Baltimore against the host UMBC Retrievers on Sunday afternoon.
Hillary Allen took the loss for Drexel despite throwing six and two-thirds quality innings and striking out eight batters. She scattered eight hits and allowed three earned rus. Shyann Beach recorded the final out in the top of the seventh for the Dragons.
Drexel got its lone run in the fourth inning when Collings dropped a double into the outfield to score Jenn Reading. But the Dragons could not complete the rally against a top notch pitcher in Bryson, who wiffed seven batters and allowed just one hit and one walk.
Becky Zill went 2-for-4 with a homer and drove in two of the Purple Eagles' runs. Teresa Healy went 3-for-3 for Niagara and scored twice.
