Philadelphia – The national stage for Div. I wrestling, this year in South Philadelphia's very own Wells Fargo Center, is set to kick off at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 17. Drexel sophomore Joe Booth, wrestling this year at 165 pounds, has put together an impressive season recording a career high 23 wins on his way to a second appearance in the national championships where he will represent the Dragons. Guiding Booth from the side-mat, in his final collegiate coaching appearance after 35 years, is Jack Childs.
Booth's first match, against Thomas Scotton from the University of North Carolina, is set for 11:00 a.m. Thursday. The winner moves on to face Stephen Burak from the University of Pennsylvania shortly after. The second round takes place Thursday night while quarterfinals and semifinals will be held on Friday with the final round on Saturday.
Scotton, a senior, enters the NCAA Championship for the third straight year. Scotton has compiled a 26-17 record and has already faced Booth once this season earning the final 5-1 decision at the Hershey Duals in November.
Coach Childs will be retiring at the conclusion of this 2010-11 season after 35 years guiding the Drexel wrestling program. Childs has pulled together a 421-270-9 record as a Dragon and is the active winningest Div. I wrestling coach with a 510 mark. Childs has led two Drexel wrestlers to All-American status and has taught, guided and coached hundreds more.
