Philadelphia - Drexel softball opens conference play this weekend with a three-game set against the Hofstra Pride in the Dragons' first home games of the season. Drexel (7-10) is coming off a split at Georgetown on Tuesday bolstered by the hot bat of Paige Collings who hit a pair of home runs in the team's 4-2 victory in game two. The Pride (14-8) have won five straight and are coming off tournament victory in the Hyatt Place Invitational last weekend. Fans can follow the action via livestats on Drexel Game Central. Opening pitches for Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's finale are slated for noon.
The Pride once again boast one of the best overall records in the conference at the start of CAA play. Led by 2010 CAA Pitcher of the Year Olivia Galati, who is a national player of the year candidate this season, Hofstra is poised to defend its conference title. Offensively, sophomore Tessa Ziemba has been the run producer in one of the league's most efficient scoring machines. She is batting .301 with two homers and 15 RBIs. Rachel Senator is the place-setter, reaching base nearly every other at bat and hitting .333 on the season.
On Tuesday, Hillary Allen was unable to hold off the Hoyas in a 4-2 game one loss that dropped her to 4-4 on the season. Paige Collings gave the Dragons a lift in the nightcap with a two-home run performance that helped Drexel pull out a 4-2 victory. Collings tied the team's single-game record for homers, which has now been matched three times in the last four games during a power surge for Drexel's offense.
All-Time Series: Hofstra leads 48-10, Drexel's last win was April, 29, 2006 a 5-2 triumph on Long Island.
Last Meeting: The Pride swept a three-game series in Long Island with two of the three games decided by one-run margins and the finale in 10 innings.
