Philadelphia – In the nightcap of Saturday's CAA-opening doubleheader with Hofstra, Paige Collings hit her second home run of the day to help the Dragons (7-12, 0-2) cut into a 5-0 deficit, but the comeback fell short in a 6-3 loss to the Pride (16-8, 2-0). Tessa Ziemba and Sara Michalowski both had three-hit games for Hofstra. The teams close out their three-game set on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
Rookie Shelby Taylor took the loss in her first home start as a Dragon. She allowed five earned runs on 10 hits and two walks and struck out two batters. Erin Wade won her sixth of the season for Hofstra. She gave up three runs on three hits, issued two walks and struck out five batters.
Wade held Drexel to one hit through five innings before Collings lit up the bottom half of the scoreboard with a three-run homer to left field to draw the game to 5-3. Olivia Galati, who was the winner for Hofstra in game one, closed out her second save of the year by retiring the Dragons in order in the seventh.
Ziemba and Michalowski staked Hofstra to an early lead with a pair of RBI doubles in the first inning. Taylor settled in her first home start of the season to strike out Laura Valentino to get out of the inning with a runner left on base.
Hofstra tacked on another run in the third inning when Jess Hirschbuhl led off with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Michalowski. She came in to score when Jess Zeilman popped a ball to shortstop that got caught in the wind and fell to the ground with Devon Metcalf in pursuit.
Two more run-scoring singles off the bats of Ziemba and Valentino in the sixth inning gave Hofstra a 5-0 lead. The Pride's advantage seemed daunting at the time with Wade throwing a one-hitter and Drexel's bats offering little protest to the effort.
But that all changed in the sixth inning when Amanda Bachmann drew a lead-off walk and Rachel Campbell singled into left field. Both runners tagged and advanced on a long foul fly ball by Laura Stagliano. After Jenn Reading struck out swinging for the second out of the inning, Collings stepped to the plate pulled an inside pitch over the fence in left field for her second round-tripper of the day.
The rally was short-lived when Hofstra added one more run in the seventh inning on a miscue by the Drexel infield. With runners on first and third and one out Michelle Lavagnino stole second. Collings fired the ball back to pitcher Shyann Beach, but the ball tipped off her glove, allowing Trisha Dreslinski to scamper home from third base.
Sunday's series finale, which was originally slated for a 11:00 a.m. start, has been pushed back to a noon start.
