Rhode Island Edges Drexel 6-5 in Extra Innings in Game Two at Buzz Classic

Woodstock, Ga. - Drexel went into extra innings for a second consecutive game at the Buzz Classic, this time the Dragons did not emerge with a dramatic victory, instead they fell 6-5 to Rhode Island (1-10) in the eighth inning. Katy Harrington went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs for Drexel (3-7). The Dragons will return to the field at the Buzz Classic hosted by Georgia Tech on Saturday against Austin Peay and Alabama Burmingham.
The game hinged on a pair of errors in the eighth inning. The first was committed by the Rams' centerfielder Kelly Coker in the top of the inning, which allowed runner Katy Harrington to take third base after starting the inning on second due to international tie-breaker procedures. Devon Metcalf singled her home to give the Dragons a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the frame.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Amie Archambault tied the score with an RBI triple down the right field line. The next batter, Amy Gleason, reached on an error by Kelly Downes at third base, which allowed Archambault to sprint home and score the game-winning run.
Shelby Taylor took the loss for the Dragons after allowing three earned runs through seven and two-thirds innings of work. She scattered six hits and three walks while striking out two batters. Alison Hartzel picked up the win for Rhode Island. She allowed four earned runs on eight hits and also struck out eight Dragons in eight innings in the circle.
Rhode Island took a 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a pair of errors by the Dragons' infield corners sandwiched around a single by Gleason.
Drexel responded by hanging a three-run inning on the Rams in the third. Paige Collings brought home the first run with an RBI double with two runners aboard. Harrington followed with a singled the plated two more runs to give the Dragons a 3-1 lead.
Harrington was in the middle of another Drexel run in the fifth inning. Jenn Reading led off the inning with a double to left field. After fly outs by Collings and Hillary Allen, Harrington poked a two-out single up the middle to make it a 4-1 Drexel lead.
An RBI groundout by Gleason in the bottom of the sixth allowed Rhode Island to chip away at the Drexel lead. The comeback was completed when clean-up hitter Nicole Massoni came to the plate with a runner on in the bottom of the seventh homered to tie the game at 4-4.
The game was Drexel's third extra-inning affair of the season, and the Dragons are now 2-1 in games that go into extra frames.
