Philadelphia - A two-run homer by Stephanie Caso in the top of the eighth inning proved to be the difference in a nip-and-tuck game that finished as a 6-4 victory for Penn (15-16-1). Devon Metcalf, Laura Stagliano, Rachel Campbell and Kelly Downes all had multi-hit games for the Dragons and Stagliano and Comfort Ahonkhai made sensational plays for Drexel in the outfield, but it was not enough to hold off their University City rivals.
Shyann Beach took the loss after throwing the final five and one-third innings of a game started by Hillary Allen and allowing three earned runs on six hits and four walks.
Reliever Mikenzie Voves got the win for Penn after throwing a scoreless seventh and eighth inning, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.
The top of Drexel's lineup efficiently produced a run in the first inning to put the Dragons on top 1-0. Hanna Parrish drew a lead-off walk and stole second base. Laura Stagliano grounded out to shortstop, sending Parrish to third before Rachel Campbell drove a single past the shortstop for a run-scoring single.
Penn pulled ahead in the third inning thanks to back-to-back homers by Alisha Prystowski and Brooke Coloma. Prystowski's was a of the two-run variety and Coloma's put the Quakers on top 3-1. Following the blasts, Allen walked the next batter on four pitches which was enough for Head Coach Kim Camara to summon reliever Shyann Beach from the bullpen with two outs. Beach retired Justine Payne on a first-pitch groundout to escape the inning.
The Dragons appeared to have another scoring opportunity brewing in the bottom of the third inning when Stagliano reached on a bunt single and Campbell singled through the right side with one out. Unfortunately, Campbell quelled her team's own rally when she left early trying to steal second and was called out. Shyann Beach followed by striking out looking, stranding Stagliano on third.
Devon Metcalf got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fourth when she hit a laser back through the middle that tipped off the glove of Tieman and landed in short centerfield with runners on first and second.
Stagliano saved a pair of runs in the fifth inning when she leapt and caught a high fly ball off the bat of Coloma that appeared to be ticketed for her second home run of the game.
At the plate the next inning, Stagliano led off with a double down the left field line. Campbell followed by drawing a walk after 10-pitch battle with reliever Cailyn Hennessy. Collings brought in one with a rope to center field and Kelly Downes followed with a well-placed bunt single that put the Dragons on top 4-3.
The Quakers pushed home the tying run in the top of the sixth. It appeared for a moment that Beach would escape giving up a pair of walks to lead off the inning without punishment. But after a pop out by Podzimkova and a fly out by Melendez, Bridget Ellsworth popped a single into short center field that held up long enough to get Payne in from second with the tying run.
Comfort Ahonkhai gave the Dragons a golden scoring opportunity in the sixth inning when she led off with a double to the gap in right center. Parrish sacrificed her to third base but the next two batters popped out to second base to end the inning.
Beach averted disaster after walks put two more runners on base in the seventh inning. She was able to induce a pop out on an attempted bunt before a single by Justine Payne snuck past a diving Metcalf and into left field. Ahonkahi charged the ball and fired home a perfect throw to Collings. The catcher grabbed the ball as Prystowski ran in from third and held on for the out despite a collision at the plate. Beach got Jessica Arneson to pop out to shortstop for the final out of the inning.
A two-run homer by Steph Caso in the top of the eighth gave the Quakers their decisive margin.
Metcalf led off the bottom of the frame with a single to left field and stole second. But a popped up bunt, a swinging strikeout and a ground out ended the game.
The Dragons return to CAA play this weekend with a three-game series at George Mason starting on Friday.
