Philadelphia – No. 12 James Madison edged the Drexel women 9-8 in a tightly contested women's lacrosse game. The Dragons (8-6, 2-3) were ahead by three, 6-3, at halftime, but the Dukes (11-3, 5-1) would outscore the Dragons 6-2 in the second half to pull out the victory. James Madison's Casey Ancarrow scored the game-winning goal with seven seconds left in the contest.
Sophomore Alyse Maiden led the Dragons with three goals. Maiden now has 29 goals and 15 assists. Teammates Kelli Joran and Jaclyn Klunder also scored a pair of goals for Drexel.
James Maidson's Ashley Kimener and Ariel Lane put the Dukes ahead, 2-0, within the opening minute of the game. Charlotte Wood scored a free position goal and started a three goal spurt for Drexel. The Dragons were ahead by one, 3-2, until Monica Zabel's unassisted goal tied the game. Drexel answered back and went on a three-goal run with ten minutes left in the first half. Drexel led by three, 6-3, at halftime.
The Dukes were able to take the lead, 8-6, after scoring five straight goals in the opening minutes of the second half. Alyse Maiden scored back-to-back goals and tied the game, 8-8. With 12 seconds remaining, Drexel's Whitney Johnson saved Ariel Lane's free position shot, but James Madison's Casey Ancarrow recovered the ball and quickly put it past Johnson with just seven seconds remaining in the game. James Madison won the final draw control and kept possession until time expired.
Senior goalkeeper Whitney Johnson posted a new season high with 11 saves and led the team with five groundballs. Johnson now has 74 saves on the season.
The women's lacrosse team will host George Mason on Sunday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m. on Senior Day.
