Hofstra Edges Women’s Lacrosse, 9-8; Dragons Face Towson in First Round of CAA Tournament

Hempstead, N.Y. – Hofstra (6-10, 2-5) defeated the Drexel women 9-8 in a tightly contested women's lacrosse game. The Dragons (9-7, 3-4) were ahead by one, 5-4, at halftime, but were unable to score after Hofstra's Stephanie Rice's goal with 5:23 remaining in the contest. Drexel outshot the Pride 19-16 and finished with six turnovers to Hofstra's 14. Drexel women's lacrosse team will now gear up for its first appearance in the CAA tournament next week.
Junior standout Charlotte Wood scored her 100th career goal in the opening minutes of the game. Wood went on to score three more goals and leads the team with 44 goals. Teammates Alyse Maiden, Kelli Joran, Amanda Gregg and Amanda Norcini also scored for Drexel.
Wood scored at 26:56 to give the Dragons an early lead. Four minutes later, Hofstra's Alex Mezzanotte scored an unassisted goal to tie the game, 1-1. After a continuous rally, Wood answered back with her third goal to put the Dragons ahead by one, 5-4, at the end of the first half.
Amanda Gregg's free position goal in the beginning of the second half put the Dragons ahead by two, 6-4. Hofstra's Lauren Chandler followed with a free position goal and looked to create momentum for the Pride. The Dragons posted back-to-back goals and were up by three, 8-5, with 15:26 remaining in the game. But the Pride went on a four-goal spurt and maintained the lead until the time expired.
Drexel will compete in the CAA tournament, for the first time in school history, against top-seeded Towson on Thursday, May 5. The CAA tournament will also feature James Madison and William & Mary.
