Dragons Face Towson in First CAA Semifinals on Thursday

Philadelphia – For the first time in Drexel history, the women's lacrosse team will compete in the CAA Championship. The Dragons will return to Johnny Unitas Stadium for the second time this season and face top-seeded Towson on Thursday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m.
The Dragons finished 9-7 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Drexel opened the 2011 campaign on the road defeating George Washington and Saint Joseph's, but dropped to sixth-ranked Penn, 12-9. The Dragons went on to host six-straight home contests and finished with a 4-2 record at Vidas Field. Drexel opened conference play with two straight wins for the first time in school history. The Dragons posted wins against Towson, Delaware, and George Mason.
In the last meeting between the two squads, Drexel defeated Towson ,7-5, on the road for the first time ever and broke a 17 game losing streak against the Tigers. Drexel's Jaclyn Klunder and Alyse Maiden both posted a pair of goals in the victory, while teammates Charlotte Wood and Katie Blazer also put points on the board for the Dragons. Senior goalkeeper Whitney Johnson led the defense and registered a season-high with nine saves.
Junior standout Charlotte Wood leads the Drexel attack with 44 goals, six assists, and 50 points. Wood recorded her 100th career goal in the 9-8 loss against Hofstra in the final regular season competition. She was also the first Drexel women's lacrosse player to be added to the Tewaraaton Watch List, which is comprised of the top lacrosse players for all three collegiate divisions.
Sophomore Alyse Maiden is the second leading goal scorer with 32 goals on the season. Maiden picked up a season-high with four goals in the win over Saint Mary's College and had a six-game scoring streak this season. Maiden and teammate Jaclyn Klunder lead the Dragons with 15 assists.
Freshmen Amanda Norcini has scored at least one goal in the first six games of the season. The Wayne, Pa. native recorded a career high with two goals in the win over Delaware. Norcini has 11 goals, two assists, and 13 points.
Senior midfielder Katie Blazer has contributed on attack and defense for the Dragons. Blazer has 15 goals, four assists, and 28 points. She also registered 32 groundballs, 21 draw controls, and caused 18 turnovers.
Seniors Sarah Bauer and Whitney Johnson lead the Drexel defense. Bauer recorded 18 caused turnovers, 9 draw controls, and 18 groundballs. She also scored her first collegiate goal against William & Mary. Johnson had made 85 stops and had a season-high with 11 saves against William & Mary.
The top-seeded Towson Tigers finished the season 10-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play. Senior attacker Jess Dunn leads the attack with 36 goals, two assists, and 38 points. Sophomore midfielder Ashley Waldron is the second leading goal scorer with 23 goals, while teammate Sarah Appelt holds the most assists with 20. On defense, Alexa Demski leads the Tigers with 36 groundballs and caused 24 turnovers. Junior goalkeeper Mary Teeters made 131 saves on the season.
The Dragons will take on the Tigers on Thursday, May 5 at 5:00 p.m. in Towson, Md. for the first semi-final game of the CAA Championship. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children ages 12 and under. Students from the participating institutions will receive free admission with a valid college ID card.
