Philadelphia – Freshman Margaux Lourtie's first career hat trick fueled the 18th ranked Drexel Dragons in the 5-3 victory over the Columbia Lions at Buckley Field. Freshman Christina Conrad tallied a goal and two assists for Drexel. The Dragons improved their record to 3-0 on the season, and are now 7-11 all-time against Ivy League opponents.
Lourtie helped Drexel gain a 1-0 lead after more than nine minutes of scoreless play. The Dragons maintained possession for the majority of the first half, but were tested at 18:02 as the Lions came down the field and earned a penalty corner. Columbia's Leti Freaney took a hard strike from the top of the circled and tied the game, 1-1.
The score remained even at the start of the second half. At 9:27, Drexel's Amanda Fleischut blasted a shot that looked to be stopped by the leg guard of Columbia's Christie O'Hara, but continued into the cage. The Dragons earned the first lead of the game, 2-1. Three minutes later, Lourtie scored two consecutive goals within seconds apart. Drexel's three-goal spurt in the second half secured the lead until time expired.
The Dragons recorded 22 shots and six penalty corners, to just 11 shots and two corners for the Lions. Senior goalkeeper Brooke Underwood posted two saves, while freshman Katie Francis made three saves in her first collegiate game. Francis played the final 16 minutes of the contest.
Drexel returns to action on Sunday, September 4 when the Dragons face No.15 Duke on the University of Delaware's campus.
