Women's Lacrosse Falls to Denver, 12-10, on Friday

Denver, Colo. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team was unable to overcome an early deficit and dropped to the Denver Pioneers, 12-10, on Friday afternoon at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Denver outshot the Dragons 28-19 and won 14 draw controls to Drexel's 10. The Dragons are now 7-3 overall and 2-1 on the road. Denver extended their winning streak to eight improving to 8-1 on the season.
Alyse Maiden led the team with three goals and two assists for five points. She now has 23 goals, 12 assists, and 35 points on the season. Junior midfielder Kristin Kopenhaver set a new season-high with four caused turnovers, while teammate Kaitlin Harris caused a season-best three turnovers.
Amanda Norcini won the opening draw control, but Drexel quickly lost the ball giving the Pioneers time to work the ball around the Dragons' defensive end. Denver's Melissa Maier looked to break the even score, but sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Santandrea came up with a big stop for the Dragons. The Pioneers continued to maintain possession and put pressure on Drexel. After six minutes of scoreless play, Denver's Rachel Dillon scored off a free position opportunity. The Pioneers went on a four goal run and held the Dragons scoreless, 4-0, until Kelli Joran scored an unassisted goal with 20:42 remaining in the first half.
After 18 minutes of scoreless play, Alissa Watts passed the ball to Alyse Maiden off of her free position attempt. At 2:56, Maiden found the back of the goal and closed the gap to two, 4-2. With six seconds remaining in the first half, Jaclyn Klunder scored from a long pass from Maiden. Denver led 4-3 at half. The Pioneers had 15 shots to Drexel's 8, while both teams had eight turnovers and four draw controls wins.
At 26:50 in the second half, Denver's Jenn Etzel had a successful free position attempt. Less than a minute later, Alissa Watts answered back with a free position goal bringing the game back to one, 5-4. The Pioneers' made their way back into Drexel's defensive end and gained a free position attempt. Denver's Melissa Maier put the ball past Santandrea followed by another goal by Jenn Etzel.
Lindsey Konvar received a long pass from Maiden and scored off of a one-on-one with Denver's goalkeeper Ashley Harman. Drexel continued to possess tight defense and moved the ball up field into the attacking end. Maiden scored from a pass from Amanda Norcini to bring the game to one, 7-6. The Pioneers fired back with goal from Jenn Etzel. Denver went on a three goal spurt and extended the lead to 10-6. At 7:06, Alyse Maiden scored a free position goal and looked to create momentum for the Dragons.
Following the draw control, Denver's Kara Secora scored a free position goal. The Pioneers led by five,11-7. Despite Drexel's three goals in the final three minutes of play, Denver was able to hold onto the lead until the game clock expired.
Drexel's Amanda Santandrea made nine saves and had two ground balls. She now has 57 saves on the season. Denver's Ashley Harman had four stops for the Pioneers.
