Fairfax, Va. – The Drexel women's lacrosse team tallied their first Colonial Athletic Association victory of the season after a dominating 16-7 victory at George Mason on Friday night. Drexel outshot the Patriots, 27-10, and won 16 draw controls to Mason's 9. Senior attacker Jaclyn Klunder led the attack with two goals and three assists for five points. The Dragons improved to 8-3 and 1-1 in the league, while George Mason dropped to 2-9.
The Dragons tallied nine unanswered goals and had six players score at least two goals on the night. Freshman Alissa Watts recorded a new season-high of four points after knocking in three goals and an assist. Teammates Alyse Maiden and Kelli Joran also recorded three goals. Maiden also set a new season-high with two draw control wins. Charlotte Wood, Jaclyn Klunder and Amanda Norcini each had a pair of goals for Drexel.
Drexel won the opening draw control and earned an early free position attempt, but George Mason's Katie Teague turned away two shots to keep the game scoreless. Kelli Joran caused a turnover and allowed the Dragons to clear down field. At 26:02, Alissa Watts scored an unassisted goal, 1-0. George Mason's Rachel Obregon answered back with a goal from teammate Mary Schwartz's pass. At 22:05, Alyse Maiden had a successful free position attempt and started a four-goal run for Drexel extending its lead to four, 5-1.
George Mason's Emily Ellisen broke up the Dragons' spurt with an unassisted goal. Teammate Kaylee Mikolon followed with another goal closing the deficit to two points for the Patriots, 5-3. With just over seven minutes to play in the first half, Drexel scored four straight goals. The Dragons held a 9-3 lead entering the second half. Drexel outshot the Patriots,16-4, in the first half and caused George Mason to turn the ball over 10 times.
Opening the second half, Joran caused another turnover giving the Dragons an opportunity to push into the attacking end. Kristen Kopenhaver shot the ball past George Mason's goalkeeper to extend the lead to seven, 10-3. Drexel went on a five-goal spurt. The Patriots' Emily Ellisen scored an unassisted goal and stopped the running clock, 14-5. The Dragons held on to the lead until the game clock expired.
Freshman Jocelyn Quaile set a new season-high with two caused turnovers for Drexel. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Santandrea made two saves for the win. She now has 59 stops on the season. George Mason's Katie Teague had nine saves.
The Dragons will travel to James Madison on Sunday, April 8. The game is set for 1:00 p.m.
