Softball Splits Two at George Washington

WASHINGTON - Playing their first non-tournament games of the season, the Drexel softball team split a doubleheader at George Washington on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the first game 8-0 before winning the second, 3-2. Shelby Taylor pitched a complete game in the back end of the twin bill, striking out five to earn her second win of the year. Drexel, meanwhile, took advantage of five Colonial errors to score three unearned runs, enough to edge the hosts in the second game.
Drexel got the doubleheader started by falling in five innings to George Washington, 8-0. Like Drexel would in the second game, the Colonials were able to take advantage of Dragon miscues, with five of their eight runs being unearned. Tara Konopka started and took the loss for the Dragons, allowed three earned runs over 3.2 innings of work. George Washington scored five in the fourth to break the game open.
The Dragons, meanwhile, managed just one hit, a one-out single in the fifth off the bat of Jess O'Hara. Drexel loaded the bases with one out in the fifth thanks to a walk and a hit-by-pitch sandwiched around O'Hara's single, but could do nothing with the runners as the Dragons left the bases loaded and saw the game end due to the eight-run rule.
Things got off to a shaky start in the second game as well, as Victoria Valos slammed a two-run home run in the bottom of the first that put the Colonials on top, 2-0. That would be all Taylor would allow, however. She scattered eight more hits over the next 6.1 innings as George Washington found itself unable to get a key hit.
Drexel got its first run in the third. Jourdan Skirha drew a one-out walk, moving to second when Hanna Parrish reached on a fielding error by the Colonials' first baseman. Next to the plate was Maggy Fermo, who hit a seemingly-routine comebacker to Courtney Martin in the circle. Martin couldn't handle it, however, and Skirha alertly came all the way around to score.
Still trailing by a run in the sixth, Sylvia Llamas led off with a line drive base hit to left field. Taylor was up next, and again it was a miscue by Martin that led to the tying run. Martin fielded the comebacker and threw the ball away. Llamas was able to come all the way around to score, and Taylor moved up to third with no one out.
With the score tied, George Washington nearly got out of the inning with no further damage. Ellen Scott popped out in foul territory, and Comfort Ahonkhai was thrown out after trying to put down a bunt hit. Up stepped Maddison Timoteo, though, and she came through with a line drive base hit down the left field line. Taylor came home with the go-ahead run.
Although the Colonials got four hits in their final two at bats and were able to load the bases in the seventh, Taylor got a strike out to end the game and give Drexel its second win of the season. She is now 2-2 on the season.
Drexel will return to action on Friday when it begins the Coastal Carolina Invitational against Wichita State at 2:30 p.m.
