Softball Drops Two to Start Coastal Carolina Classic

CONWAY, S.C. - Karli Boyer got two hits for Drexel, but the Dragons were shut out, falling 4-0 to Wichita State in the Dragons' opener at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. Tara Konopka allowed just two earned runs over five innings of work, but got little support from the Dragons' offense in the loss.
In the second game, the Dragons were blanked 8-0 as the host Coastal Carolina scored seven runs after the fourth inning. Shelby Taylor took the loss for Drexel. The shutouts were the fourth and fifth of the season for the Drexel offense.
Unlike some of their previous shutouts, the Dragons were able to get some hits off Wichita State hurler Sloan Anderson, getting five hits and pushing runners into scoring position in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings. Despite that, the Dragons were unable to come up with keys hits when they needed them as they were held off the scoreboard. Meanwhile, Konopka struck out two and scattered five hits over her five innings of work, but allowed two earned runs as Wichita had what it needed to take the victory.
In the second game, Drexel managed just three hits, including a leadoff single by Hanna Parrish in the first inning. Taylor allowed just one unearned run over the first four innings, but worked into a jam in the fifth, loading the bases with two singles and a walk after retiring the first two batters to start the frame. Up stepped Morgan Noad, who drove the ball up and over the right field fence, a grand slam that gave Coastal Carolina some breathing room and effectively buried the Dragons.
Drexel will return to the field on Saturday, taking on Western Carolina and Albany on the second day of the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
