Softball Falls to Western Carolina, Albany

CONWAY, S.C. - The offensive woes continued for the Drexel softball team as they dropped two games at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Saturday, 3-2 to Western Carolina and 9-0 to Albany. Hanna Parrish had three hits over the course of the day, but it was not enough.
The Dragons were able to take an early lead on Western Carolina in the first game of the day. With two out and no one on in the second, Jess O'Hara beat out an infield single to the hole between shortstop and third base. Up stepped Ellen Scott, who roped a gapper to left-center field that went all the way to the wall. O'Hara came around to score from first as Scott pulled into second base with a double.
Western Carolina was able to even things up in the fourth inning off Drexel starter Shelby Taylor. They needed just one hit, as Taylor Sigmon singled to lead off the inning and was pushed around to score by three Western Carolina walks. An inning later, Sigmon also scored the eventual game-winning run for Western Carolina as they scored twice in the fifth to push ahead, 3-1.
Drexel got a run back in the seventh and had a chance to send the game to extra innings, but was unable to do so. Maggy Fermo led the inning off with a walk, followed by a double off the bat of Parrish that scooted down the left field line and sent Fermo around to third. With two runners in scoring position and no one out, Taylor stepped up and hit a shot back up the middle that could have scored two had the Western Carolina pitcher not snared the line drive for the first out of the inning.
WIth one away, Karli Boyer was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. After Jenn Reading struck out, Comfort Ahonkhai rolled a grounder through the left side of the infield, hard enough to keep Parrish at third but sending Fermo plateward. Unfortunately for the Dragons, Western Carolina was able to retire Sylvia Llamas on strikes to end the threat and the game.
In the second game of the day, Drexel was shut down even further at the plate, managing just three singles and a walk. No Dragon baserunner was able to move past first base as seven struck out as the Great Danes scored five in the second, one in the fourth and three more, all unearned, in the sixth to salt away the game.
Drexel will conclude its run at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on Sunday when it faces off one more time with Western Carolina. First pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
