PHILADELPHIA - The Drexel softball team battled back all day, but was unable to overcome the deficit as they fell to Delaware in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams, 11-4. Drexel (8-16) outhit the Blue Hens 10-7, but left 10 runners on base in the loss. Amanda Bachmann went 2-for-3 with two doubles, a run scored and a run driven in for the Dragons.
Shelby Taylor (3-8) took the loss for Drexel, while Chenxi Jiao (7-2) earned the victory for Delaware.
The Blue Hens struck first, scoring one in the first inning and two more in the second to take a 3-0 lead. But Drexel fought back. The Dragons got on the board in the third inning after Amanda Bachmann led off with a double, the Dragons' first hit of the game. After Taylor put down a bunt to move Bachmann up to third base, Comfort Ahonkhai laced a single back up the middle to drive in the run.
In the fourth, Bachmann was again in the middle of things as the Dragons pulled within a run. Jenn Reading led things off with a single. After Bianca Iamurri pinch ran, Jill Popek hit a roller to shortstop that Delaware's Michelle McKinnon bobbled and then threw wildly to first. Both runners were safe on the error. After a bunt attempt was unsuccessful, up stepped Bachmann, who split the gap in left-center field, driving a ball all the way to the wall as Iamurri scored the second run of the game.
Delaware plated three in the sixth inning, including two unearned runs, as the Blue Hens extended their lead to 6-2. But again, the Dragons persisted. Maddison Timoteo was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the sixth. After the next two batters popped out, Ahonkhai, Parrish and Fermo stroked consecutive singles, the last one plating both Timoteo and Ahonkhai to get the Dragons back within two at 6-4.
The Blue Hens were able to put the game away in the top of the seventh, however. Again, they were aided by some Drexel miscues, as they scored five runs, two of which were unearned. Drexel committed six errors on the afternoon while Delaware had just one miscue.
The Dragons and Blue Hens will return to action on Sunday afternoon, when they play a doubleheader at the Drexel Softball Field. Game time for the first game is set for 12:00 p.m.
