Maiden Leads Drexel Past Villanova, 14-10

Philadelphia – The Drexel women's lacrosse team defeated Villanova, 14-10, at Vidas Field on Wednesday night. The win marks the Dragons' fifth straight victory over a Philadelphia-area school. Villanova took an early two-goal lead, until Drexel went on a four-goal spurt to retake the lead. The Dragons never trailed throughout the remainder of the game. Senior attacker Alyse Maiden led the offense and tied her career-high with four goals. The Dragons outshot Villanova, 30-15, and won 16 draw controls to the Wildcat's nine. Drexel improved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 at home, while Villanova dropped to 1-3 on the season.
Villanova's Elise Bendinelli and Hannah Goforth gave the Wildcats a two-goal cushion in the opening minutes of the first half. At 23:22, junior Amanda Norcini answered back with an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to one, 2-1. Alyse Maiden, Kristin Kopenhaver and Kelli Joran continued the run helping Drexel to a 4-2 lead. With just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Villanova's Chelsey Henderson added another point brining the game within one-goal. The Dragons registered three more goals advancing to 7-3 at halftime.
After an unassisted goal by Maiden, the Wildcat's Maria Bowman scored in the following play closing the gap to four, 8-4. Drexel's Rudloff and Norcini added two more points to give Drexel a 10-4 advantage. In the following 10 minutes, both teams recorded three goals each. Kelly Palace netted her second goal of the night giving the Dragons' a 14-7 lead. Despite Villanova's three-goal run in the final minutes of play, Drexel was able to hold off the Wildcats earning its fifth straight win of the season.
Rudloff and Kopenhaver tied their career-highs with two goals. Joran, Norcini and Palace also added a pair of goals for the Dragons. Joran and Kopenhaver won five draw controls each. On the defensive end, Teresha Bradley and Amanda Santandrea both starred in Drexel's 14-10 win. Bradley now has 22 stops on the season.
Drexel Women's Lacrosse will visit UMBC on Saturday, March 9 at 1:00 p.m.
