Baltimore, Md. - The Drexel women's lacrosse team's five-game winning streak came to an end with a 14-8 loss at UMBC on Saturday afternoon. The Dragons scored three unanswered goals in first half and held a 4-3 advantage at halftime. The Retrievers' eight-goal run goal in the second half was enough to hold off Drexel for the win. The squad moved to 5-1 on the season.
After winning the opening draw control, UMBC was able to keep the ball down in its attacking end until ending the play with a goal at 27:45 by Abby Wilson. Less than four minutes later, Alyse Maiden earned a free position opportunity and bounced the ball past opposing goalkeeper Kendall Mason to tie the game at one. Kelli Joran won the following draw and pushed the ball down field. Joran crossed a pass to Norcini, who fired the ball into the back of the net giving the Dragons' their first lead, 2-1. Maiden scored the team's third unanswered goal with a shot to the bottom right of the cage.
In the last 42 seconds of the first half, UMBC's Alyssa Semones lined up for a free position attempt and converted on a straight-shot to close the gap to one-goal, 3-2. Semones won the next draw and tied the game off of a fast break. Drexel didn't waste any time as Norcini answered back with a quick goal in the last six seconds of play in the first half. Drexel led by one, 4-3, at half. While both teams posted nine shots each, the Dragons won five draw controls to UMBC's three.
With four minutes off of the clock in the second half, the Retrievers' Semones bounced the ball into the top left of the goal to tie the game at four. UMBC went on a seven-goal run taking the largest lead of the game, 11-4. At 11:10, Joran added another point for the Dragons. The Retrievers scored two more goals and held on to the lead until the game clock expired. Drexel's Norcini, Maiden and Kristin Kopenhaver each scored in the final seven minutes bringing the final score to 14-8.
Maiden led the team with three goals. She is now eighth on Drexel's all-time points list with 142. Norcini finished the day with three goals, two draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers. Joran collected five draw control wins. Sophomore goalkeeper Teresha Bradley had two stops totaling 25 saves.
The Dragons will start their four-game homestand on Wednesday, March 13 against Colgate. The game is set for 4:00 p.m. at Vidas Field.
