Women's Lacrosse Defeats Delaware, 11-6

Philadelphia - The Drexel women's lacrosse team defeated Delaware, 11-6, at Vidas Field. The Dragons trailed by one point at half time before outscoring the Blue Hens, 7-1, in the final 30 minutes of play. Drexel outshot the visitors, 22-17, and won 12 draw controls to Delaware's seven. Kelli Joran and Jessica Rudloff each scored a three goals in the team's final regular-season contest at home. The Dragons improved to 11-4 overall and tied the program's record for the most conference wins with four, 4-1, which was set last season.
After gaining possession off of the opening draw, the Blue Hens worked their way into the attacking end. Delaware's Caitlin McCartney bounced the ball into the goal to give the visitors a one-goal lead with just under three minutes into the first half. Kristin Kopenhaver had a successful draw allowing Jessica Rudloff to circle around the goal and look for an open player. Rudloff flicked a pass to Joran, who netted a quick-stick goal to even the score. Less than minute later, the Dragons ran a similar play, however, this time Rudloff earned the goal and Joran tallied the assist. Sophomore Alissa Watts helped the team to a 3-1 lead with a free-position goal.
With 18:20 remaining in the first half, the Blue Hens' Shannon Hawley converted on her free position attempt. Two minutes later, senior Alyse Maiden broke through Delaware's defenders before passing the ball off to Norcini, who bounced a close-range shot into the back of the cage, 4-2. In a seven-minute span, the Blue Hen's registered three unanswered goals and regained the lead at halftime, 5-4. Both teams shared 10 shots each in the first 30 minutes of play.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Maiden assisted a long-pass to Rudloff to tie the game, 5-5. The Dragons went on a three-goal rally with points by Rudloff, Maiden and freshman Emily Duffey. Delaware's Caitlin McCartney posted her second goal to bring the game within one point, 7-6, for the fifth time of the night. In the last 14 minutes of the game, Drexel recorded four more points on the board finishing with an 11-6 victory. Together, the Dragons' defense allowed only one-goal in final period.
Norcini led the team with three caused turnovers. The Wayne, Pa. native and senior Kristin Kopenhaver dominated in draw controls with four wins each. Senior Kaitlin Harris and Joran also caused turnovers for Drexel. Sophomore goalkeeper Teresha Bradley had a strong performance in the cage with nine saves, including six in the second half. She now has 93 stops on the season.
Rudloff set a career-high with three goals in Friday's win. Joran also had three goals and two assists for five points, which marks her seventh game with three or more scores this year. Joran currently has 98 career goals. Maiden finished with two goals and an assist. She is now tied for seventh on Drexel's all-time leaderboard with 115 goals. Watts, Norcini and Duffey also added points.
The Drexel women's lacrosse team will face the final two games of the season on the road. The Dragons will return to action at Towson on Sunday, April 21 at 1:00 p.m.
