Women's Lacrosse Drops a 14-8 Decision at Towson

Towson, Md. – The Drexel women's lacrosse dropped a 14-8 decision at Towson on Sunday afternoon. The Dragons scored six goals in the second half, however, were unable to come back from an early Towson run that set Drexel back five points at half. Towson outshot the Dragons, 28-20, while Drexel held a 13-11 advantage in draw controls. The squad moved to 11-5 overall and 4-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while the Tigers improved to 6-1 in the league.
The game remained scoreless in the opening eight minutes of play until Towson's Ashleigh Rohrback netted an unassisted goal to give the Tigers the first lead of the contest. Towson continued to test Drexel's defense resulting in seven unanswered goals. At the eight-minute mark, junior Amanda Norcini won the draw control allowing the Dragons to push downfield. Freshman Emily Duffey ended the Tigers' run with an assist by senior co-captain Alyse Maiden. With just under three minutes to go in the first half, Duffey converted on a free position shot scoring her second goal of the day. The Dragons were down 7-2 at half.
Towson's Laura Zinkand and Paige Duncan added two more goals at the start of the second half. At 21:41, sophomore Joelle Hartke connected with senior co-captain Kristin Kopenhaver, who fired the ball into the back of the cage to bring the game within six points, 9-3. The Tigers' scored a pair of goals, before Drexel's Jessica Rudloff netted an unassisted goal. With 12:54 showing on the clock, sophomore Alissa Watts had a successful free position attempt. Five minutes later, Maiden scored an unassisted goal. Towson's Laura Zinkand and Ashley Waldron created an eight-goal cushion, 14-6. Kopenhaver and senior co-captain Kelli Joran each had a goal in the final two minutes of play. Towson was able to hold off the Dragons with a final score of 14-8.
Duffey tied her career-high with two goals and draw controls against the Tigers. Kopenhaver also had a pair of goals and led the team with five draw controls. Maiden, Joran, Watts, and Rudloff also put points on the board for the Dragons. Maiden finished with two assists and three points. She now is seventh on Drexel's all-time leaderboard with 116 goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Teresha Bradley made three saves totaling 99 stops on the year.
The Dragons will travel to the CAA's Hofstra on April 27 in the team's final regular-season contest. Saturday's game is set for 4:00 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y.
