Softball Blanked in Series Opening Doubleheader with George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Drexel softball team played well enough to win both games of Friday afternoon's doubleheader at George Mason, but the Dragons could not muster any offense as they fell to the Patriots, 2-0 in the first game and 1-0 in 13 innings in the second. Tara Konopka allowed two runs over six innings of work, but took the loss as the Dragons managed just two hits in Game One. Shelby Taylor went the distance in Game Two, allowing just an unearned run in the 13th while scattering six hits.
Interestingly, though both pitched outstanding ballgames and combined to throw 18 innings, neither Drexel pitcher recorded a strikeout. It was the first time all season that a Dragon did not strike out a batter in either end of a doubleheader.
The Dragons had a chance to take the lead in the fifth inning of Game One when, with two outs, Maddison Timoteo got the Dragons' first hit with a line drive single the opposite way to right field. Jill Popek that sliced a single to right that moved Timoteo around to third, but the runners were stranded on the corners as Mason was able to get out of the inning.
The Patriots scored single runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to take their 2-0 lead. The Dragons got a runner into scoring position in the sixth, but could do nothing with it and went down in order in the seventh as the Patriots took Game One.
In Game Two, as well, the Dragons had an opportunity to take a lead relatively early on. In the fifth inning, Drexel catcher Karli Boyer singled to right field to lead off the inning. After moving to second on a wild pitch and to third on a ground out, Boyer was caught between third and home when Popek hit a hard comebacker to the mound. A long rundown ensued, and the Patriots were finally able to tag out Boyer after a play scored 1-5-2-5-2-5. Popek moved to second during the play, but was stranded there.
That was the second base runner of the day to reach third base for the Dragons, and four more would reach second as the game progressed. Boyer and center fielder Hanna Parrish each had two hits to lead the team, while Taylor, Sylvia Llamas, Popek and Comfort Ahonkhai each reached base multiple times. The Dragons could not push anything across, as the game moved on and became Drexel's third game this season to extend past 11 innings.
In the bottom of the 13th, Mason pitcher Casey Herring led off by drawing a walk. After the next batter reached on a throwing error by the third baseman Llamas, Samantha Barney was walked to load the bases and set up a force at any bag. Unfortunately for the Dragons, leadoff hitter Lauren McColgan lined a base hit to left field, plating Herring with the run to earn herself and the Patriots the victory.
The Dragons and Patriots will conclude their seasons on Saturday, when the squads face off for a single game at noon.
